What is the Site Futures Committee and what has it accomplished?

The Site Futures Committee (SFC) was chartered in 2012 by its parent committee, Grand County’s Moab Tailings Project Steering Committee, to develop recommendations for a community vision for potential future use of the federal lands at the site of the former Atlas uranium ore processing mill. The SFC prepared the initial community vision in 2013 and the 2018 Community Vision Update. Resolutions by Moab City and Grand County approving the prior versions of the community vision require that it be updated every five years.

The SFC put together a power point presentation for the Grand County Commission in 2018 which summarized the 2018 Community Vision Update process and recommendations, available here

The full SFC 2018 Community Vision Update After the Pile recommendations to the Moab Tailings Project Steering Committee was subsequently approved by the Grand County Council and the Moab City Council in 2018. The After the Pile Report includes summaries of the 2018 public comment and the update process. Its main sections have detailed descriptions of each recommended potential future use and site development guidelines. Be sure to review the full 2018 Community Vision Update Report: After the Pile July 31, 2018.

Where can I find more information about the status of the former Atlas Mill Site Remedial Action Project?

The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management webpage for the Moab UMTRA Project has information about operations at its Moab and Crescent Junction sites. It is also a portal to DOE documents about the Moab Project.

Grand County’s Moab UMTRA Project webpage contains a wide variety of information about the Moab UMTRA Project (Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action) and the prior work of the Site Futures Committee. It includes coverage of the county’s Moab Tailings Project Steering Committee (MTPSC), the county’s committee tasked with monitoring the activity of the Moab UMTRA Project.

The Grand County Site Futures Committee Webpage has additional information about the Site Futures Committee and its prior work developing the community vision for future potential use of the former Atlas Mill Site.
