Grand County Connects: a place for land use planning and community engagement 

The County is currently looking at solutions to mitigate noise impacts in the community. A recent ordinance to amend the Land Use Code was brought to the Planning Commission -- it was ultimately postponed until further public feedback is provided and community consensus can be reached.

What would you like to see at the former Atlas Uranium Mill Site? A community park? An arts and event center? The Grand County&rsquo;s Site Futures Committee is updating the 2018 Community Vision for potential future uses of the 480-acre, federally-owned, former Atlas uranium mill site, located northwest of Moab. As of the end of October, 2022, about 81 percent of the mill tailings have already been transported to the U.S. Department of Energy&rsquo;s disposal cell near Crescent Junction making this community vision finally on the horizon. Help plan for potential community uses of the during our 2023 Community Vision Update by sharing your preferences for future site uses. Attend the Mill Site Futures Open House on November 16th!The Site Futures Committee is hosting an open house on November 16th to initiate the 2023 Community Vision Update for potential future use of the former Atlas mill site. The <a href="https://grandcountyconnects.com/17631/widgets/55303/documents/36294" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2018 Community Vision Update: After the Pile</a>, which is also available to the right, was our second version of the community vision and is the starting point for 2023. Join us at the upcoming open house to review our prior work and express your preferences for future use of the site. The open house will be held at Moab City Hall&rsquo;s City Council Chambers on Wednesday, November 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.&nbsp;The open house will have work stations staffed by committee members where attendees can review and comment on large maps depicting potential future uses of the mill site that were recommended in 2018. Attendees may also complete the SFC&rsquo;s Mill Site Potential Future Use Preference Survey on paper or online through <a href="https://grandcountyconnects.com/site-futures/survey_tools/site-future-s-survey" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">this survey</a> (also available below).If you can&rsquo;t make it to the open house, be sure to complete the&nbsp;<a href="https://grandcountyconnects.com/site-futures/survey_tools/site-future-s-survey" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">survey&nbsp;</a>and submit any other comments to the Grand County Planning and Zoning Department by January 31, 2023. Hard copy comments may also be mailed to Grand County Planning and Zoning, ATTN SFC, Grand County Courthouse, 125 East Center Street, Moab, UT 84532. Background on the Community VisionGrand County and Moab City require an updated Community Vision at five-year intervals. The last five years have been a period of significant change for Moab and Grand County. One readily visible change is that the tailings pile at the mill site tailings pile is much smaller. As of late October, 2022 about 81 percent of the mill tailings have been transported to the U. S. Department of Energy&rsquo;s disposal cell near Crescent Junction. While there is still much work to be done cleaning up the site, the SFC needs your input to keep up with community sentiment about potential future community use of the mill site. Community input and an updated 2023 Plan will help our elected officials to continue to obtain money for tailings removal as well as help secure funding and support to transfer this property out of Department of Energy ownership in the near future.There is no guarantee that future community use of the Atlas mill site will be achieved as the property is Federal Land administered by the Department of Energy (DOE). However, other communities have repurposed former DOE properties where clean-up has been completed. Grand Junction City is presently constructing Las Colonias City Park along the Colorado River at the site of another former uranium mill. If we try, a locally-developed outcome might also happen in Grand County.
